Bugs, Bees, and Butterflies Week.

The summer is come upon us and the children are having themed weeks for the next 11 weeks. They will be doing so many fun crafts, sensory exploration, and learning about so many different subjects. This week the kids have been learning about different bugs, bees, and butterflies. There are also some cute snacks you can make for children in the shapes of these wonderful creatures.

Snack Recipes

Let’s start with those nutty Butterflies. Slice a few celery sticks, fill with peanut butter and top with some pretzels. Finish it off with a few candy eyes to make these flying bugs complete.

Who doesn’t love a sweet caterpillar? This crawling bug is simply made with a wood skewer, some grapes, two candy eyes and a little icing gel. Love that smile! And of course, every back yard has a ladybug or two. A cracker topped with provolone cheese holds a cherry tomato with a black olive and a few candy eyes. I speckled the tomatoes with icing gel. Tip: If you don’t think the sweetness would compliment this snack you could always use an edible black marker instead.

Pretzel Butterflies Material Needs:

  • gluten free pretzels

  • dairy free white chocolate

  • dairy free chocolate (I prefer Enjoy Life Foods)

  • gluten free red hot candies

  • sprinkles

  • allergen friendly jelly beans

Step-by-Step Tutorial:

Place a piece of parchment paper on the counter. “Glue” two pretzels together with melted dairy free white chocolate. Fill the gaps of the pretzels with the white chocolate with using either a toothpick or piping it in a bag (whatever is easier for you) and immediately fill in with sprinkles, jelly beans or candies of choice. how to make bug chocolate bark

you will need:

  • 1 bag white chocolate chips (about 2 cups)

  • blue candy color (or any preferred color)

  • regular and peanut M and Ms candy

  • black icing*

what to do:

Line a baking tray with wax paper and set aside. Pour the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave at 70 percent power for one minute. Continue at 15 second intervals, as needed, until chips are mostly melted. Stir to fully melt using the residual heat. Stir in a few drops of candy color until desired shade is achieved. Scrape the chocolate onto the baking tray and spread evenly. You will not fill the entire baking tray, only about three-quarters of the tray.

Arrange M and Ms as bugs (do not worry about the legs yet). You should be able to fit about twelve bugs, nicely spaced. Let the chocolate set at room temperature (or more quickly in the fridge) for 10 to 20 minutes. Pipe the legs with the icing.

Score the chocolate with a sharp knife. When the chocolate fully sets, carefully break apart into pieces.

Banana Butterfly Snack

This idea started as a snack for our meal plans, but quickly turned into a favorite on our Instagram account! We just used a slice of a banana, pretzels for wings, dried cranberries for eyes, and some apple slices for the antennae!

Hope you all enjoy these super cute and easy snack ideas. They all look so delicious and the kids will have fun saying they ate some bugs.
